Top 5 road cycling routes in Oisans

The Oisans region is a true playground for road cycling lovers. From legendary climbs to quieter valley roads, every ride offers a unique experience, whether you’re chasing performance or simply enjoying the landscape.

Here are five of our favorite routes to explore during your stay.

1. Alpe d’Huez – the legendary climb
  • Distance: 14 km climb

  • Elevation gain: +1,120 m

  • Start: Bourg d’Oisans

This is the climb everyone talks about. With its 21 iconic bends, Alpe d’Huez is as much a mental challenge as a physical one. Each turn is numbered, giving you a strange sense of progress… and humility.

A must-do at least once.

2. Col de la Croix de Fer – wild and spectacular
  • Distance: ~29 km from Allemond

  • Elevation gain: +1,500 m

Long, varied and absolutely stunning. This climb takes you through forests, past waterfalls and up to wide open alpine landscapes.

Less “famous” than Alpe d’Huez, but often more memorable.

3. Col du Glandon – a pure alpine challenge
  • Distance: ~24 km

  • Elevation gain: +1,450 m

Often combined with Croix de Fer, the Glandon is slightly more irregular and demanding. The final section is breathtaking, both visually and physically.

Perfect if you’re looking for a real challenge.

4. Col d’Ornon – quiet and underrated
  • Distance: ~11 km

  • Elevation gain: +700 m

A much quieter climb, ideal for a more relaxed ride. Surrounded by forest, it offers a peaceful atmosphere far from the busy iconic routes.

Great for recovery days… or simply to slow down.

5. Allemond loop via Oz 3300 – local favorite
  • Distance: variable (30–60 km loop)

  • Elevation gain: flexible

Starting directly from Allemond, this loop takes you towards Oz 3300 through beautiful forest roads. It’s less intense than the big climbs, but perfect for a scenic ride.

A favorite for warming up or ending the day gently.

Final tip

Whether you’re here to push your limits or simply enjoy the ride, Oisans offers something for everyone. Early mornings and late afternoons are often the best moments to ride — quieter roads, softer light, and cooler temperatures.
