History of Auberge La Douce Montagne

The story begins in the 1920s when the Les Trois Cols building was constructed. First this building served as shelter for the men who worked in mines (slate). There were also silver mines around Allemond and in Allemond there were silver smelters (fonderies). Some street names today still refer to this.

In 1924 it became a hotel under the management of Mr. Chanoux. There were several hotels in Allemond in the 1930s. People came here for the fresh mountain air and to make excursions (by “bus”) over the various cols.

ldm-historisch

In 1935, Mr. Chanoux built an outbuilding (on the remains of the walls of a smelter). This building was called Les Arcades; there was a billiards table and a tennis court was built in the garden. This way, hotel guests could enjoy themselves in/around the annex building. This outbuilding would later serve as the foundation for Auberge La Douce Montagne…

The hotel was closed during the war years. In 1945 the hotel was a temporary shelter for war prisoners to regain their strength. They often stayed there for extended periods of time with their wives and children.

In 1946 it was briefly an “ordinary” hotel again, before being renamed “maison de repos” in 1947 (people came here for rest on doctor’s orders). There was always a nurse present and a doctor (Mr. Faure) came for daily consultations. Initially, men and women were admitted to this “nursing home”, but this caused problems and the Sécurité Sociale soon decided that only men were welcome.

In the 1960s, Mr. died. Chanoux, the buildings (hotel/outbuilding) remain in the possession of his wife and a certain doctor Puch takes over the management. The hotel closed its doors in 1977. Part of the hotel building is rented to the electricity company (EDF).
The EDF uses the building as a meeting and exhibition space during the construction of the dam/power station.

In the 1980s, the outbuilding was occasionally rented out to a business association that offered affiliated employees the opportunity to spend their holidays there with their families.

The main building was demolished in the early 1990s and the “Pole Medical” (doctor’s post) now stands here. The outbuilding stood empty for years and was purchased by the Soet family in 1996. They turned the building into a tourist attraction again: Auberge La Douce Montagne.

In 2008 the hotel was taken over by the Alfrink family. They have renovated the building into a modern hotel.
In 2022 we (Kevin Kuiperij and Carmen Knipppenburg) took over the auberge from the Alfrink family and we have been running it with great pleasure ever since.
